Tips for Managing Federal Student Loans

  • Contact your loan servicer immediately if you are having trouble making payments.  There may be deferment options available, but you won't know unless you ask.  If you're not sure who your loan servicer is, visit StudentAid.gov/log-in.
  • Pay Interest when possible, during school, grace, deferment and forbearance periods.  Every dollar helps, and will reduce the amount of interest due upon graduating, or being enrolled less than half-time (6 credit-hours).
  • Debt can be scary, but don't ignore correspondence from your servicer.  Make sure to also contact them if you have moved, changed phone numbers, or have other personal information that needs to be updated.
